Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they added.

Law enforcement then located many other marked cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police state early analysis suggest the fluid was most likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; investigators are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they stated.

Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have asked to the public for information.

A senior representative stated the vandalism left him speechless and had to be solved quickly.

"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, referring to the killing of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
